Varying spiritual traditions use slightly different ways of describing the chakra system. The chakras are energy vortexes in the subtle body, which channel refined cosmic energy through the more dense physical body. People with clairvoyant vision are able to see these centres of energy and whether they are flowing and alive or stagnant. The chakra system also has a physical aspect, linked to bundles of nerves, called plexi, located at specific junctures all along the spinal system. These bundles of nerves send information into the central nervous system, organs and glands.

A sangoma is a practitioner of herbal medicine, divination and counselling in traditional Nguni (Zulu, Xhosa, Ndebele and Swazi) societies of Southern Africa. They perform a holistic and symbolic form of healing, embedded in the beliefs of their culture that ancestors in the afterlife guide and protect the living. Sangomas are called to heal, and through them ancestors from the spirit world can give instruction and advice to heal illness, social disharmony and spiritual difficulties.

Both men and women can be called by the ancestors. However, a consequence of refusing the calling is usually on-going physical or mental illness. Over the last twenty years increasing numbers of people of western cultural origin are seeking solutions to chronic illness through alternative means. One of which is initiation into the spirit medium traditions of Southern Africa. Some people are finding that symptoms, for which they had fruitlessly sought solutions in western treatment modalities, closely resemble ‘the illness of calling’. The physiological and psycho spiritual symptoms associated with this condition are understood in these cultures to be treatable only through the rigorous initiations and treatments associated with becoming a spirit medium.

October's Coaching Circle offered participants an opportunity to explore different yoga techniques which release tension from your body and calm and focus your mind.

The idea was to offer simple yoga practices which you can weave into your daily life to support you to maintain your sense of vitality and enthusiasm – particularly in times of stress and overwhelm. As a yoga teacher, I regularly work with therapists who give their all to their clients yet fail to nurture and care for themselves. Ultimately, this leads to you struggling to give your best to your clients and your family, and eventually leads to burn-out. To prevent this it is vital you make time throughout your day to rest, recharge and reenergise your system. The evening started off with a gentle introduction into Bhakti Yoga (yoga of devotional chants) as a way to encourage everyone to reconnect with their inner heart song and raise the vibration of the room. It was a joy to feel everyone's energy expand and it reminded me just how easy it is for us to take a moment and bring a bit of sacredness into our busy lives.

Stress-free tip: If you are feeling a bit stressed or overwhelmed, take a few minutes and quietly sing the words 'thank you' to your favourite song. You will be amazed at how this simple practice uplifts and elevates your spirit. The rest of the evening consisted of a variety of chair yoga poses, self-care massage exercises, partner yoga games and meditation techniques which you can easily slip into your daily schedule.

Some of the chair yoga poses and breathing exercises we practised were as follows: Feet and Ankles Stretch: sit comfortably on your chair. Keep a straight back. Stretch your legs out and slowly rotate your ankles and feet five times in each direction. Neck Stretch: sitting tall and straight, rest your hands on your lap. Breathe in and as you breathe out slowly lower your right ear to your right shoulder. Ease into the stretch and gently return your head to centre. Repeat on the other side. Stretch Arms Above Your Head: sitting or standing, raise both arms above your head and stretch out through your fingers. Hold your left wrist with your right hand and gently stretch over to your right. Relax and breathe into the stretch. Return to the centre. Switch arms and repeat on the other side.

As you can see from the few yoga exercises presented here, it is easy to slip in a few minutes of calm and stillness during your day. "I loved speaking at St James's Church, Piccadilly, last night – when I went into the church for the sound check I couldn't see any angels but I knew they were there, but then suddenly I could see what looked like a crimson mist developing in the aisle from the ground up. When it reached knee level, the aisle was suddenly full of angels walking through the mist. When I came back in later to begin the talk to the full house of 650 people, the place was incredibly bright, I could see the light of the guardian angel behind each and every one there, and loads of other angels filling every nook and cranny of the church. In fact the most difficult thing in doing the interview was avoiding being distracted by angels there.
Alternatives is such a glorious organisation. I only wish we could have a group like them in every city of the world."

Coaching Recipes for Confidence

Confidence: a slippery so-and-so, wouldn't you say? One minute it's here & the next it seems to have vanished into thin air, leaving behind a quivering wreck battling on alone and pretending to the world we have a plan, when in truth we are unsure of what, when and how to move forward.

For some of us confidence appears only in certain settings (when we are sure of ourself, our surroundings and when the acceptance of others is guaranteed). For others it seems to come and go like the wind, taunting us with the possibilities of success and happiness, gently whispering 'if only'. If only you had the confidence to speak up, then everything would so very different, if only you had the guts to ask him or her out, then maybe you could finally find love and settle down, if only you were confident enough to hand in your notice, then you could finally start your own business... If only you had more confidence.

The dictionary definition of confidence is 'trust in a person or thing; a belief in one's own ability; trust or a trustful relationship'. So when we say we lack confidence what we are actually saying is that we lack trust - in the outcome, in being accepted and not rejected, in knowing that we will succeed, in knowing that this is not a big mistake, in knowing that we have the skills and knowledge, in knowing that the other person will love us.
